The offending code began with:
<font style=’position: absolute;overflow: hidden;height: 0;width: 0′>

Then, there were about 150 links and a closing </font>.

That's as much as I will offer because the links actually leveraged another "innocent bystander's" blog and I won't reveal that address.

I remember writing/asking/worrying about legitimate uses of the offset class as I lie to call it. That was about a year ago and have since learned that Google didn't have a problem with the technique itself, rather what it was being used for. Obviously a paragraph of spam links wouldn't be well-received. Curious, Bob, how'd they get in? Sounds like an FTP or server access crack.

It'll almost certainly be a Wordpress security flaw.

Robin: It was not a Wordpress problem. However, the people who did the hack knew exactly what to touch.

Mike: It was a security breach at the hosting service. A password file for a small segment of their servers was stolen. The hackers then infected a number of sites in various ways. I did get notification from the ISP; they did their part well. I failed to look closely enough at my own site and took no remedial action. In the meantime, the hackers updated that one file a time or two. Google appears to have caught it within 10 days of the most recent update. No other files were touched.

Lesson: Don't take the notice from the ISP so casually.

The title had me worried, wondering if the technique I use for providing accessibility on client's site was now "banned" by Google.

Sorry to hear about the issues with your site, but glad your host caught it. If I might ask, who is your wonderful host?

Deborah, my host is Dreamhost. Good plans, inexpensive, more bandwidth than most of us will ever use, great support.Tell them I sent you by using this url: http://www.dreamhost.com/rewards.cgi?bob-easton

Disclosure: that's a "rewards" url which not only gets you low rates, but gets me a reward for bringing in another subscriber.

Hi Bob:

I found it difficult to read Google's notices -- check contrast.

Cheers,
